2023 - 160th Anniversary

The 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Buffington Island is July 19th, 2023.  The Buffington Island Battlefield Preservation Foundation will be honoring this anniversary throughout the entire 2023 campaign.  We will have battlefield tours, Facebook trivia, a Civil War symposium, raffles, and other things in store.  Keep our website saved as a favorite, and check back often to stay on top of all the 2023 activities!

The Buffington Island Battlefield Preservation Foundation is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the battlefield in Portland, Ohio. The Foundation also works to educate the public about Morgan's Great Raid and Ohio's largest Civil War battlefield.  Support our efforts and become a member today!

The Battle of Buffington Island, fought on July 19, 1863, was the most significant engagement in what is officially called Morgan’s Indiana-Ohio Raid. It is also the largest Civil War battle fought in the Eastern Midwest states of the United States. Two future U.S. Presidents, Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley, Jr., participated in the battle. The battle was not fought on the island in the Ohio River, but rather on the 1,230 acres of bottomland surrounding the village of Portland.
