The Federal Commander Edward H. Hobson was placed in charge of the Provisional Division and tasked to chase down Morgan and his command. He was captured by Morgan in 1864 in an ironic turn of events. Morgan's Raid Reenactment	A Second Future President Colonel Rutherford B. Hayes was the commanding officer of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was in charge of the immediate forces on the (West) Virginia shore.	Memorial Service Reenactors participate in the annual memorial service.
General John Hunt Morgan Morgan and his men went across Meigs County until they encountered Union forces in Portland, Ohio. The Battle of Buffington Island is Ohio's largest Civil War battlefield.	Reenactors Over the years many Civil War reenactors have participated to keep history alive and work to preserve the battlefield in Portland, Ohio.	Colonel Basil Duke Duke was Morgan's right-hand man as well as brother-in-law, and commanded one of the two Confederate brigades in Morgan's command.
Memorial Service Members of the reenacting community, Sons of Union Veterans, and the Ohio History Connection come together to remember the Battle of Buffington Island.	The Forgotten Commander Adam "Stovepipe" Johnson, who led the raid into Newburgh, Indiana in 1862, was an effective partisan leader, but is often overlooked during the Great Raid.
